Proof That Charli XCX Has Epic Pop Star Style

by Amanda Richards

Something about Charli XCX's style and presence speaks to me. I'm not one who obsesses over the way-too-curated fashion choices that most instant pop stars splash all over Instagram, but when Charli XCX shows up, I pay attention. Her style is vintage glam meets Nancy Downs, with a little bit of your wildest BFF thrown in, and it makes me want to drink champagne from the bottle and scream at nightclub bouncers for no reason. It's the kind of aesthetic that I've fantasized about, from my sullen adolescence to my recent realization that I am a 30-year-old woman who won't be working fishnet sleeves into my day-to-day look.

Beyond her amazing style, here's what I know about the U.K. singer/songwriter: She was the voice of Icona Pop's synthy battlecry "I Love It," which became the song that twentysomethings in crochet crop tops and ankle boots absolutely needed to hear at 3 a.m. Charli also gave us the catchy chorus in Iggy Azalea's "Fancy," i.e. the few bars that forced us all to secretly love it. Finally, she recorded the mega hit "Boom Clap," which was part of the soundtrack from that important and inspiring movie that I assumed I was too old for, where two teenagers either fall madly in love, die suddenly, die slowly, or... murder each other? Whatever it was, the oceans seemed to swell with teen tears, and Charli XCX's The Fault in Our Stars song was at the center of it all.

All things considered, I may be slightly out of touch, but I still know an amazing sense of style when I see it. Here are some of my favorite looks from my favorite new wild-maned pop star.

1. The Time She Wore A Literal Smoking Jacket

I love the mixed prints and textures in this look, and this jacket might be the only time I approve of a pair of juicy lips smoking a cigarette.

2. The Time She Wore A Floor Length Fur Coat For A Performance

This is how you let the people know that you're in charge.

3. The Time She Dressed Like A Barbie From The Dark Side

This sequined suit is simultaneously respectable and diabolical. In other words, it reminds me of an outfit that Barbie would wear to come alive at night and sabotage your entire life.

4. The Time She Channeled Courtney Love

This one goes out to all of my contemporaries who have tried this look and failed. Charli XCX executed it flawlessly.

5. The Time She Put Together An Outfit That Payed Homage To All Your Childhood Fantasies

When you look at this outfit, what do you see? I see Clueless, I see Britney Spears on the cover of Rolling Stone, and I see the shiny pants of the early 2000s. I see my wildest dreams.

6. The Time She Inspired Your Next Hungover Brunching Outfit

You probably won't look this good, but you damn sure have to try.

7. The Time She Wore Laser-Cut Leather And Suede

Honestly, I was so busy obsessing about this outfit that I hardly noticed Steven Tyler standing next to her.

8. The Time She Wore The Perfect Faux Fur

In true grunge fashion, she paired it with a silky lingerie-inspired top.

9. The Time She Wore Fringe And Served You Serious Face

After a lot of cocktails, my friends and I used to try to take photos like this. [Needless to say, t]They didn't come out the same. I'll blame it on the fact that we didn't have access to a jacket of this caliber.

10. The Time She Gave Us An Upgraded Cher Horowitz

No one will ever pull off a plaid miniskirt suit quite like Cher, but Charli has solidified a place for plaid coordinates in the new millennium.

11. The Time She Proved That She's Not A One-Trick Pony

Charli's style is usually the kind of thing you could imagine your wildest friend gathering off the floor of her closet and throwing on before a night of clubbing. Here she takes it to a whole new level, and she does it perfectly.

12. The Time She Was Accessibly On-Trend

The best part about this look is that it's totally chic with just the right amount of edge, and that it's unfussy enough for anyone to pull off.

13. The Time Her Skirt Had Its Own Skirt

This Viktor & Rolf gown is bizarre but more importantly, it's totally unexpected. Leave it to Charli to pull this off with aplomb.

14. The Time She Performed in Oversized Menswear

She looks amazing in bodycons and bralettes, but she also has the ability to pull off a totally shapeless and baggy silhouette.

15. The Time She Practiced Her Pop Star Right To Do Too Much

She's talented, driven, and passionate about her work, and for that I respect her ability to move the teenage masses. However, there's no better reason to be a young, hot pop star than to be able to casually wear a dress like this. A pair of sequined flamingoes means that you are truly living your best life.
