9 Trends Kim Kardashian Basically Invented

by Gina Jones 2

In my eyes, there's no arguing against Kim Kardashian's status as one of the most fashionable women in the world and probably in history. Even if Kanye West has influenced her style, her makeup, outfits, and overall vibe prove that Kim Kardashian starts trends. Some folks might not want to believe as much because they're too clouded by Kim K's early noughties outfits or the fact that Paris Hilton was basically Kardashian's boss once upon a time. But the reality star's rise to fame and entrance into the sartorial game are things that I admire, and would never wish to mock. Seriously, if only I could fulfill my aspirations so fully.

When it comes to new trends surfacing these past few years, it can be difficult to remember which ones Kardashian actually started versus which ones she just made her own. After all, she's basically taken ownership of the selfie's popularity and she changes her style up so often that it's hard not to just call her the queen of everything and move on.

With 2016 right around the corner, I can't wait to see Kardashian leave behind the simple bodycon dresses of her pregnancy with Saint West and dive head first back into some more out-there outfits. And of course, I await to see which trends will be deemed hot and which ones are not for the new year, according to the Kardashian queen herself. In the meantime, let's take a look back at nine current trends Kim K wore first.

1. Cut-Outs

Whether her body is completely on show or underneath cut-outs covered with lace, Kim K has rocked this trend for years. Although 2011 only sounds like yesterday, I have to face the facts and admit it was five years ago. Scary stuff.

2. Contouring

This one's probably the most obvious of trends that Kim K and her family started, but I'm glad the Kardashian/Jenner clan doesn't hold back on sharing their glam tricks with us. Contouring has always been a huge part of the Kardashian look, as proven by this old photo of the reality star from 2009, long before the fad hit the mainstream.

3. Co-Ords

Maybe these aren't the co-ords we think of now, but outfits like this one from 2010 prove that the Kim K we know and love was all about matching tops and bottoms way before the rest of us did it. More recently, Kim Kardashian and Rihanna rocked co-ords at a pre-Grammy lunch this summer, and brought the trend back into the mainstream at full force.

4. Nude Tones

Kardashian has always been a fan of the nude shades that she still rocks today, and I can't think of another celebrity who wears this many layered nude tones so well. Just check out this adorable babydoll nude dress from 2006!

5. Matching With Your BFF

This is something that Kardashian did with her old BFF Paris Hilton all the way back in 2006, and that she still does now with her new BFF, North West.

6. Statement Colors

Although Kardashian definitely wears a lot more black these days, she's always known that a bold hue can make a statement. Here she is rocking bold colors in a more modern way.

7. Bodycons

The reality star's love for bodycon clothing is well known, and has always been a part of her style.

8. Corsetry/Waist Training

Although waist training has only become popular in the last year, images like this makes me assume she's been a fan of the fad for far longer.

9. A Strong Lip

I swear 2015 has been the year of the pout, arguably thanks to Kim K's little sister, Kylie Jenner. But lest we forget that Kardashian was rocking strong lip colors and a glam pout way before Kylie.

Quite frankly, I'm pretty excited to see all the trends Kardashian hasn't yet started in the future.
