Update: In a press conference Monday morning, Orlando police confirmed that 49 people had been killed and 53 injured early Sunday morning at Orlando's Pulse gay nightclub in the deadliest mass shooting in recent U.S. history. After opening fire on the crowd, an individual named Omar Mateen had taken hostages and was ultimately killed in a stand-off with police; Mateen had called 911 and pledged allegiance to the Islamic State shortly before the massacre. Orlando mayor Buddy Dyer declared a state of emergency, and the massacre is being investigated as an act of terrorism.
The victims' names were released by the city of Orlando on its website as their next of kin were informed.
Here are some ways to help the Orlando shooting victims and their loved ones: you can also donate to the victims' fund, as well as express your solidarity with the LGBTQ community by posting a tribute online. You can also attend a vigil near you to honor the victims.
Earlier: Devastating news was released late Saturday night, when it was released that a person had opened fire at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, and shot dead what police estimate to be 20 people, with 42 others injured. The crowd at Pulse, a popular gay nightclub, was upwards of 100 people, many of whom were taken hostage by the gunman. There have been numerous photos and videos released of what the Orange County Sheriff has labeled a "domestic terrorism incident," and one Snapchat video of the Pulse Orlando shooting that's been revealed truly captures the fear and horror of such an event. Update: Orlando's mayor has updated the death toll to 50 deceased and more than 50 more people in hospital.
In the Snapchat video obtained by WESH News and released on Sunday, the person taking the footage captures the absolute chaos of the massacre, and 24 gunshots can be heard being fired in the span of just nine seconds. The videographer and another person seem to be in shock as they film the sounds, with the person filming saying, "Oh, my god. People are getting shot, dude" and the other person adding, "We need to get out of here." Yet despite their sentiments, both people continue to stand there watching the scene unfold, possibly too shocked to move.
It's a terrifying video of a horrific scene, and officials are still figuring out the details of what exactly happened and who is responsible for such a horrendous crime.
