I Recreated Kylie Jenner's Best Hairstyles At Home

Kylie Jenner is the queen of transforming her entire look through changing her hairstyle — which inevitably leads one to wonder how to recreate Kylie Jenner's hair. Most recently, K. Jenn's locks have turned pink, proving that bright, rainbow hair colors are trending this season. In the best possible way, Jenner reminds me of the trio of good fairies from Sleeping Beauty who can't decide on the color of Princess Aurora's dress so they keep changing it from blue to pink. I love that Jenner completely throws the hair rule book out of the window and just does what she wants, when she wants. She doesn't seem to be afraid of critique of her colorful, "out there" styles and that's a great way to live IMO.

In a way, I wish I could turn back time and tell my teen self that it's ok to experiment with multiple hairstyles and that she shouldn't care what people think. By experimenting with your style in this way during adolescence, I think it helps to define exactly what you do like so that when you reach early womanhood, you have an array of "looks" that you really enjoy sporting and feel comfortable wearing.

So this barnet experiment is not only an homage to Kylie Jenner's most signature hairstyles and a virtual "you go girl!" to her bravery at trying new things, but hopefully it will also function as inspiration for you to step out of your comfort zone and try some new hairstyles, too — I certainly did!

The Blue Tips

This is arguably one of Miss Jenner's most famous looks, so I thought I'd tackle this style first. Also, I wanted a visual explanation to why in the rest of this experiment my hair looks slightly blue with almost green-tinged tips — it was just because it didn't wash out so well. Fingers crossed it comes out in the next wash!

So for me, this style was quite a daring stunt. Experimenting with my hair kinda' scares me a bit. I have only ever dabbled with pink streaks in my youth and then (shock horror) dyed my hair brown. That was as crazy as I got, people. So before forever committing to blue-tipped, blonde hair, I did my research to find some non-permanent products. I found these awesome hair chalks:

These Derma V10 hair chalks were really awesome and came in the shades you can see on the front of the box. The best thing about these was the fact that I had heard on the beauty grapevine that they literally wash in and wash out. Although that wasn't quite true in my experience, the color did wash out enough on my first attempt that I didn't have a heart attack in the shower. I really love these and couldn't recommend them enough for gals out there who are a bit nervous about changing their hair color, or who just want to temporarily rock some bright shades. The only down side was: These chalks were messy...

To be honest, I have only myself to blame. I didn't research how to best use these hair chalks so I just dove in like an optimistic bull in a hair salon. The results were super messy and not only did I have to clean myself up afterwards (my neck, hands, and arms) but I also had to remove blue stains from my bathroom and clothes. However, I think it was totally worth it.

I definitely recommend completing this style on an evening when you know you will have the time to do it. The chalks were pretty tricky to use at first! I went into things thinking that you could literally draw straight onto your hair, but alas, this didn't work. What was I thinking?! Instead, I had to wet the chalk and the areas of my hair that I wanted to color, which I'm sure you can see from the above pictures, was a very messy process. Although I liked the change in color, I was a little disappointed that I hadn't been able to find a chalk that was the exact same teal shade as Kylie Jenner's. I like this style as a bit of a change and perhaps for a special occasion, such as a night out or a cool event — but I probably wouldn't want to have blue hair every day.

The Sleek And Straight Center-Part 'Do

This look was pretty easy for me to recreate as this is my natural hair! I haven't quite got the center-parting down to a T yet, though, as I have a "cow lick" (you know that funny, arched bit that never stays down at your hairline?) and that little section tends to do whatever the hell it wants... That pesky "cow lick" is also the reason that I can't have bangs without a huge gap in them. I do, however, enjoy the fact that this "situation" is named after what I imagine one's hair would look like upon being licked by a cow.

The Messy Bun

Kylie is often seen with her hair pulled up in an effortless, messy bun, so I knew I had to recreate this look. I'm normally an "each hair has its place" kind of girl so I wasn't sure if I'd like this disheveled yet somehow chic look, but I proved myself wrong — which was what this experiment was all about. I really like my messy bun from the front, but I'm not too sure about my side profile. I feel from the side, the actual bun is not quite high enough (like Kylie's) and therefore puts a bit of a frumpy spin on it, which was definitely not the look I was going for.

The Flower Garland

Although my floral headband is nowhere near as large as Kylie's, I still really like this look. Adding a flower hairband to an outfit instantly gives it an injection of feminine, festival glamour. What's not to love?

The Mermaid Waves

Miss Jenner is the master of mermaid hair. Can't you just imagine her lounging on a rock in a clamshell bra as the waves crash dramatically behind her? To achieve this look, I used my trusty Babyliss heated rollers. I decided to go for the rollers rather than hair tongs or straighteners because the rollers allow for the top part of my hair to remain straight and only curl the bottom, just like Kylie's 'do. Here were the results:

I was really pleased with this look as I think it's not too far off Kylie's (although I think hers is either much thicker than mine, or she's possibly wearing extensions), plus it made me feel oh-so-Hollywood. Please adopt me as your new British BFF Kylie!

The Snapback Cap

This was my favorite hairstyle! Kylie Jenner loves a snapback cap and now, so do I! I paired it with the mermaid curls from before to create one of her all-time signature looks. I love how the girly, mermaid waves juxtaposed nicely with the tomboyish, backwards cap. This is also my fave photo because I couldn't resist making my lips larger like Kylie's gorgeous ones by pulling a pout, and it just tickles me every time I look at it.

As an ex-nervous-hair-experimenter, I can now say with help from Kylie Jenner and her awesome hairstyles that I am a changed woman! I think the more you can mix up your hairstyle, the better. Keep people on their toes and stay one step ahead of the fashion pack by revamping your locks once in a while.
