I love a good New Year’s Eve party as much as the next person. But sometimes, staying in is the way to go. You don’t really need to get dressed up and go out in order to ring in the New Year right. And if you’re in a relationship, the perfect New Year's Eve could be spent right at home with your partner.
“Staying in with your partner on NYE is better than going out because you get to have quality time with the one you love,” Nora Dekeyser, a matchmaker at personalized dating and matchmaking service, Three Day Rule, tells Bustle. When you’re out and about, waiting in lines, crammed in a small space and your feet begin to hurt, you really aren’t thinking about how great the past year might’ve been or how exciting the new year is about to be. The typical NYE party scene isn’t exactly the best for ending and starting a New Year with positivity and gratitude.
Dekeyser suggests that couples who stay in on New Year's should tell each other the three best moments they had in the past year and the three goals they're working toward in the future. These don’t necessarily have to be moments spent together. They can also be personal. "Staying in rather than going out on NYE gives you the time to spend together, and appreciate being together,” she says.
Staying in? Here are some ways to have the perfect NYE in with your partner:
“The perfect New Year’s Eve at home with your partner begins with changing the ambience of your space to something softer, warmer and simultaneously more festive,” Marina Shalman, lead design consultant to dating a relationships consulting firm, Rapport Relationships, tells Bustle. Playing around with lighting can instantly transform a space from functional to romantic. Go for table lamps and candlelight. Use warm bulbs that exude a yellow light over ones that are more white or blue, since those can better help set the mood. Also, try adding in some softness by bringing out plush blankets in warmer tones.
“Bring in festive touches, from a few sparkling trinkets to your favorite festive glassware to transform your space into a romantic oasis on New Years Eve,” Shalman says. “Cheers to love and romance in 2017!”
2. Cook A Delicious Meal Together
“It is far less expensive to buy great cheeses, a good bottle of wine and some delicious fish or steak than it is to pay for it in a restaurant,” Rhonda Milrad, the founder and chief relationship advisor of Relationup tells Bustle.
You can have a memorable dinner without having to overspend and not deal with the headache of it all. If you’ve ever done New Year’s Eve at a restaurant, you know what I’m talking about.
3. Mix It Up And Start The Evening With Some Pre-NYE Festivities Sex
Instead of waiting until the end of the night, Milrad suggests to start the evening with sex. “Not only are you adding some spice to your sex life, but you’re setting up for a night of feeling close and connected,” Milrad says.
4. Have Your Own Movie Marathon
Choose movies you’ve been wanting to share with your partner. “We’ve all had that ‘Have you seen ______? No? You’d love it!’ conversation,” Allison Gerrits, a matchmaker at Three Day Rule tells Bustle. “NYE is the perfect time to cozy up and take turns with your must-sees.” As always, Netflix is likely to have some great options.
5. Get Closer And Do Something To Build Intimacy
Get to know each other’s love language. Or as Gerrits also suggests, spend some time asking each other a few of Arthur Aron’s 36 questions to make you fall in love. “I wouldn’t recommend rushing through them in one sitting but you can make it your resolution to plan dates around asking two to three throughout the year,” she says.
6. Get A Couples Massage And Have An In-Home Spa Night
"A couples massage at home is a great way to welcome 2017. Not only does a massage boost your mood and ease aches and pains, a couples massage is a great bonding experience,” Eva Carey, National Zeel Massage Therapist Director tells Bustle. “Plus, when you get a massage at home, you don't have to go through the hassle of traveling on New Year's Eve.” With an on demand at-home massage service like Zeel, you don't even need to make your New Year's Eve plans ahead of time. You can book your in-home couples massage as little as an hour in advance. Or you can break out the champagne and trade massages with your partner. It’ll be an intimate and relaxing way to begin the new year.
7. Have A Game Night
"Spend the night in PJs and crack each other up by playing games like Cards Against Humanity or Fibbage," Erika Kaplan, a matchmaker at Three Day Rule, says. Throw in some champagne and you’ll be sure to have a fun night.
As you can see, you don't have to go out or away to have a perfect NYE with your partner. As long as you two are celebrating the start of the New Year together, it's sure to be a special night.
