What Even Happened In January 2015?

by Michelle Lulic

As 2015 comes to a close, we begin to look back at the beginning of the year and... Wait, what happened in the beginning of the year? What happened in pop culture in January 2015, guys? Um, yeah... Well, it's all good, because I know I can't be the only person who forgot. Being that it's December, January 2015 feels like it was forever ago. Nowadays, we're too concerned with the new Star Wars movie, the upcoming award season for the 2015-2016 calendar, and all of the awesome television shows we can watch on Netflix. However, much has changed in the past year — and all of the celebrity news for 2015 began back in January.

Things have changed even more specifically within the entertainment industry, because January always happens to be the heart of award season and the time for celebrities make fresh starts with their relationships. From movie releases to the hype that is award season to artists making a comeback, 2015 really did start off with a bang. Plus, it helped set up exactly what news was to come for the rest of the year. How? Well, it's actually more apparent than you might think.

So, let's take a little refresher course on January 2015, shall we? Here's all of the entertainment news that you may have forgotten from the beginning of the year.

1. Tons of Baby News

January was filled with baby news, including Alec Baldwin and Hilaria Baldwin announcing they were expecting, The Hills star Holly Montag announcing her pregnancy, Macklemore expecting his first baby with his fiancée, Nick Lachey and wife Vanessa welcoming their second child, Benedict Cumberbatch having his first child with his wife, and Jennifer Love-Hewitt and Zooey Deschanel announcing their pregnancies. January was full of baby-hype... and all of that wasn't even all of it.

2. Shia LeBouf Shocked and Kind Of Scared Us

This Transformers star made his career comeback (sort of) by starring in Sia's haunting music video for the song "Elastic Heart" with Maddie Ziegler. Creepy or just artistic? It's almost a year later, and I still can't decide.

3. Justin Bieber's Calvin Klein Ads Were All The Rage

Although his music took the real crown when it comes to Justin's career in 2015, it all started out with some photos of him in nothing but his underwear. While the debate about the accuracy of those photos raged on, Bieber ended up being hilariously mocked by Saturday Night Live over them, and later agreed to be roasted for his entire career on Comedy Central.

4. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler Host The Golden Globe Awards

These ladies started 2015 by bringing the laughs! With a hilarious opening monologue, Gina Rodriguez winning CW's first Golden Globe ever, and George Clooney talking about his new wife — Amal Alamuddin — the 2015 Golden Globes were certainly a highlight of January 2015.

5. Bizarre Relationship Make-Ups and Break-Ups

Nikki Reed and Ian Somerhalder engaged? Nick Cannon and Mariah Carey file for divorce? From unexpected hook-ups to even more shocking break-ups, January was just the beginning of a year full of surprising celebrity couple news.

6. The World Met Caitlyn Jenner

It was in January 2015 that rumors that Jenner was a transgender woman first started to surface. While it wasn't until April 2015 that she got to tell her story on her own terms, her family quickly rallied behind her, and now Caitlyn Jenner has risen to become an icon. This is a truly beautiful turnaround from the beginning of the year, especially considering how long she spent hiding her true self.

7. Katy Perry And Missy Elliot's Super Bowl Half-Time Show

This news was announced back in January, and we know now that it was ah-mazing to say the least! Plus it launched something of a comeback for Missy Elliot that was long overdue.

8. American Sniper Dominated The Box Office

Other movies released in 2015 include Taken 3 and The Boy Next Door, but American Sniper killed all other box office hopes with $105.3 million in its opening weekend. Remember when that was a thing? I don't blame you if you forgot in the wake of The Force Awakens.

All these events might seem like they happened a lifetime ago, but it's really only been 11 months. How the time flies.
