Depending on where you are in the world, you may be sick and tired of hearing about snow. Regardless of whether you're expecting a visit from a winter storm or if the frosty tyrant is currently with you, you're going to want some snow day supplies to make your day the best ever. There's a certain nostalgia linked with snow days; you'd get sent home from school to play games with your friends and get to eat your favorite cereal and drink hot chocolate made by your mom, because she had to take the day off too.
As an adult, snow days can be equally fun. You can have a super productive snow day, spend your snow day with your roommates, or even get around to reading a short novel. Although, if you work from home, you may find your snow a little less fun because you still have to work when everyone else has the day off — every job has its cons!
And on a more sombre note, even though snow days can be totally fun, please remember to stay safe — preferably indoors or away from moving vehicles. Here's a list of supplies you'll need for the best snow day ever to stay safe, comfortable, entertained, and well fed:
1. Coffee Or Tea
Just because your town, city, or state has come to a halt doesn't mean that your caffeine addiction will! Make sure you've got plenty of coffee or tea in your cupboards, along with anything you normally put with it, so that your routine can carry on as normal and you don't end up with the shakes.
2. Rain/Snow Boots
Gangster Wellies, $14, Asos
Growing up in England — which is a rather rainy place — I understand rain boots to be a necessity. When it snows, if you need to venture out, you're going to want to wade through the endless white like a warrior, instead of getting home with very wet and freezing cold feet.
3. Your Favorite Snacks
Don't be stuck indoors without your favorite snacks to nibble on! Load up on your fave snacks before the snow gets heavy.
4. Your Favorite Magazines And/Or A New Book
There may be times during the day when you find yourself alone (especially if you live by yourself) and possibly without any electricity if the power goes down. The solution is to invest in some analogue entertainment, so buy a bunch of your favorite magazines and maybe a new book to cover all bases.
5. A Flashlight, Batteries, And Candles
Don't be taken by surprise when a blackout comes; create a blackout box in an easy to reach area, which contains items like matches, flashlights, candles, and batteries just in case. Because, how else will you read your magazines?
6. Hot Chocolate With All The Trimmings
Treat yourself to a glorious hot chocolate with all the trimmings. And by "all the trimmings" I obviously mean alcohol. Find out which alcohol goes best with cocoa, and you'll be having the best snow day ever in no time. For non-alcoholic versions, max out on marshmallows, whipped cream, and anything else that's yummy which you can fit in your mug. Vegans can also join in the fun by using non-dairy milks, creams, and vegan marshmallows.
7. Hat, Scarf, And Gloves
Make the most of your time spent frolicking in the snow by wrapping yourself up in a hat, a scarf, and some gloves. Because blue fingers and a red nose don't look good on anyone. Also, the warmer you are, the longer you can stay out building snowmen!
8. Pictionary
Pictionary Game, $16, Amazon
If you find yourself with a home full of friends or family, make sure you have this super fun game in your arsenal. It involves teams, a timer, and drawing hilarious pictures — it's a blast!
9. A Onesie
Asos Curve Unicorn Onesie, $43, Asos
IMO, onesies should be mandatory for everyone on snow days; they're comfortable, often novelty themed, and warm. What more do you need from an item of snow day clothing?
10. Frozen Pizza
Considering you're going to try and pack as much fun (and possibly junk food) into your snow day as possible, you might find yourself fancying a pizza as the day wears on. Depending on how bad the snow is, the pizza delivery guy may not be able to actually make it to your home, so ensure your freezer has at least one frozen pizza inside — if you have friends over, you don't want to be sharing your one and only pizza!
11. Your Favorite Movies And TV Series
As if you need an excuse to binge-watch Mad Men or stick a Harry Potter marathon on! Choose from a streaming website or app, or go old school and buy the hard copies at your nearest store or online. Just make sure they arrive before the snow does!
12. A Thermos
Thermos Vacuum Insulated 16 Ounce Compact Stainless Steel Beverage Bottle, $20, Amazon
Invest in a Thermos for carrying around your spiked hot chocolate and soup. You could take it on a snowy picnic or take it with you when you leave the house so that you're not stranded anywhere without a snack.
13. A Bath Bomb
Tisty Tosty Bath Bomb, $7, Lush
There's nothing more decadent than sipping an alcoholic hot chocolate and reading a great book while you're soaking in an aromatic bath bomb heaven. If you add the sight of snow falling outside to this picture, you have a dream scenario.
14. Toilet Paper
Angel Soft 48 Double Rolls Bath Tissue 12 Count (Pack of 4), $22, Amazon
As long as you have an ample store of food, water, and toilet paper you literally won't have to leave the house. So buy it in bulk.
15. Alcohol
As the snow day wears on and the possibility of the snow day turns into a snow week, you may find yourself drinking alcoholic beverages that you would not usually touch with a barge pole. The solution lies in stocking up on all your faves before the worst of the snow hits so, if you end up hosting a party, you're not going to be stuck offering your guests disgusting dregs-based cocktails.
16. Cards Against Humanity
Cards Against Humanity Party Game, $25, Amazon
Cards Against Humanity truly is, as the box describes it, "a party game for horrible people." This is the game to bring out when everyone's a little tipsy, you'll most likely find yourselves rolling on the floor laughing. Although be warned: This is not a game for those with a sensitive demeanor.
17. Condoms
Durex Performax Intense Ribbed & Dotted With Delay Lubricant Premium Condom 12 Count, $7, Amazon
Nobody knows what you'll get up to on your snow day (or snow night), so don't limit your possibilities by not having some condoms in your bedside drawer or in your purse.
Stay warm, cozy, and safe during your snow day and don't forget to have fun!
