'Bachelorette' Overnights Can Involve Some Travel

by Caitlin Gallagher

Even though viewers were left in suspense about which three men will get overnight dates on The Bachelorette with JoJo Fletcher, the fantasy suite is a rite of passage in the world of The Bachelor and The Bachelorette, so the overnights will happen no matter what. Once she eliminates Chase, Jordan, Luke, or Robby, JoJo will be headed to Thailand during the July 25 episode where the infamous fantasy suites will be on the table. While it appears that JoJo's remaining men will all be courting her in Thailand, have the men on The Bachelorette ever gone to different locations for their overnights? Although the show typically has all three remaining suitors in one place for the fantasy suites, that's not always the case.

When The Bachelorette first started — over 13 years ago! — the runner-up from the first season of The Bachelor was chosen as the Bachelorette. Trista Sutter (née Rehn) took on the duty of being the inaugural Bachelorette and considering she's still married to the man she chose — Ryan Sutter — she gave fans some seriously high hopes for the success rate of couples formed on The Bachelorette or The Bachelor. But what's fascinating about Trista's season of The Bachelorette from many moons ago is that each guy had his own destination when it came to the overnight dates.

Trista has come out to say that she only kissed three guys during her time as the Bachelorette and she also tweeted the message that the "Fantasy Suite isn't all about sexual fantasies as it may imply." Yet while I don't really care about what's going on behind closed doors (to quote Shakespeare, "To get it on or not to get it on — that is at the discretion of the parties involved."), I was interested to remember that each of Trista's men received their own location to woo her. While the other contestants from Trista's season are a distant memory, Trista had her overnight date with Charlie in Cabo, Mexico and her overnight with Russ in Sedona, Arizona. The land of love ended up being Seattle, Washington since that's where Ryan's fantasy suite was located.

After Trista came Bachelorette Meredith Phillips. The show decided to go with the route of each man in the same location so Meredith took her three remaining men to Puerto Rico with Ian in San Juan, Chad in in Isla Verde, and Matthew in Dorado. (All located pretty close together.) However, the third season with Jen Schefft had the multiple locations again with John Paul in Bermuda, Jerry in Hilton Head, South Carolina, and Ryan in Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

Since Jen, while the men and Bachelorette might get taken on a private plane or helicopter to a different region, The Bachelorette has stuck with keeping the fantasy suites located in the same country. DeAnna Pappas headed to Grand Bahama Island for her overnight dates with Jason, Jesse, and Jeremy. Jillian Harris got a tour of Spain when she hung out in Madrid, Seville, and Barcelona with the four men left for the overnight dates — Ed, Kiptyn, Reid, and Wes. After Jillian, Ali Fedotowsky hit up Tahiti with Roberto (complete with a heart-shaped lagoon), Chris, and Frank (who left to be with his ex-girlfriend).

From there, Ashley Hebert went to Fiji where not one — but two guys left. Ben and J.P. stayed, but Constantine left the show after telling her he didn't love her (even a helicopter and a waterfall couldn't help) and Ryan, who returned for a second chance, was sent home by Ashley. But there's no need to feel bad for Ashley since she found love in Fiji with J.P. and the couple is expecting their second child together.

Emily Maynard's season was next and she is known for coming out and saying she wouldn't use the fantasy suite to set an example for her daughter. Still, all three remaining men — Sean, Jef, and Arie — were sent to Curaçao regardless if true overnight dates happened or not. For Desiree Hartsock, while the name of the country where her overnights took place can be a bit confusing (yes, Antigua and Barbuda is one country), she took Drew, Chris, and Brooks to the island nation. Drew's date was technically in Antigua with Chris' overnight technically in Barbuda and as for Brooks? He ended up dumping Desiree there instead of going on an overnight.

The tenth Bachelorette, Andi Dorfman, went to the Dominican Republic with Josh, Chris, and Nick and though he got to take a helicopter to a private island, Nick didn't win that season. (Might've had something to do with his fantasy suite-themed children's book.) But while Nick was down, he wasn't out since he ended up being runner-up on Kaitlyn Bristowe's season as well, with the overnights for Nick, Ben, and Shawn taking place in Ireland.

After 11 seasons and only two Bachelorettes having different locations for their overnights, JoJo is sticking with Bachelorette tradition in Thailand. Although Trista jokingly stated she was jealous to Us Weekly since she believes that the Bachelorettes nowadays "get to go on much better trips!" it could be argued there was an advantage to having each overnight date take place in a different location. The Bachelorette was able to have a completely unique experience with each of the remaining men — even if she may have suffered some jet lag. Yet, with JoJo going to Thailand with three out of the four remaining men, JoJo's guys will have to be OK with each of their fantasy suites being in the same country. Because no matter where the overnights take place, it's always a whole lot of drama for one location to handle.
