Quirky Makeup Trends That'll Be Popular This Year

What are the new, hot, quirky makeup trends going to be for 2017? Well, I'm glad you asked. In 2016 we saw a glorious array of unicorn, mermaid, holo, and glitter magic, and 2017 is shaping up to be similar. And the magic won't just be in a single item, it will be in collections. According to one of the founders of Storybook Cosmetics, Mandy Maynard, "2017 will be all about 'collections'. Single products will always be great, but this year will cater to those makeup enthusiasts looking for the ultimate items to add to their lineup. Specifically collections built around a single theme with coordinating items." So everything we love, but more of it, and coordinated into collections? YAS, 2017. YAS.

Collections aren't the only quirky makeup trend for 2017 that's expected to be huge. According to one of the other Storybook Cosmetics founders (they're rad triplets) Erin Maynard, "Nudes are always great but people are wanting to be adventurous with their makeup right now. Metallics, holographics, bold colors." She's speaking my language, especially with the holo shout out. Here are some examples of these, and other quirky beauty trends that will help you unleash your inner mermaid and/or unicorn. Because what's better than that?

1. Patterned Lips

In 2016, two-toned and ombre lips were all the rage. In 2017 it looks like patterned lips are going to be the must-have focal point of our faces. The lip look above features the sacred mermaid theme (moment to drool, please) but I wouldn't be surprised if we saw brave MUA's and gutsy makeup fans rocking some aditional patterns this year.

2. Bold Lip Colors

Bold lip colors aren't new for 2017, but they are going to be big. While we've all seen blue, purple, black, yellow, green, and orange lip colors making social media appearances, 2017 looks to to be the year when they truly become mainstream. I know "becoming mainstream" doesn't sound very cool, but it does mean you're less likely to get some wicked side eye from your boss/teachers/parents if you rock these looks.

3. Eyeliner Designs

Eyeliner is a great place to start if you want to add something quirky to your 2017 look. We've begun seeing unicorn, candy cane, and helix eyeliner designs, but this trend is just beginning. If you're not confident in your artistic skills, you can always invest in a good glitter or bright colored liner. Plus, you know what they say... the bigger the wings, the closer to God. Wait, I think they say that about hair. Weither way, it works.

4. Rinbow Highlighter

Remember back in the day (cough early 2000's) when even wearing dark lipstick was frowned upon? That goodness 2017 in continuing with the "anything goes" makeup movement. That means you don't have to give a second thought to a bold, quirky highlighter, including one that comes with all the colors of the rainbow. Ooooh. Blinding rainbow...

5. Glitter Everywhere

When the full face using only glitter challenge starting making the rounds on YouTube, my glitter-obsessed heart stopped dead in its tracks. Sure, it was meant as a joke challenge, but I don't even care. I'm calling it right now that 2017 will be the year of glitter everywhere. Glitter highlighter, sparkly glitter eyebrows, glitter lips, glitter, glitter, glitter. Just make sure you're using cosmetic glitter and not craft store glitter. We don't want anyone to lose an eye.

6. Temporary Face Tattoos

It was only a few short years ago that face tattoos were still a super no-no. They didn't say anything about your style accept that you probably weren't interested in working with the public. Today we've retired those stale, judgmental attitudes. In fact, 2017 is going to see a surge in the temporary face tattoo trend. You're probably already seeing really cute temporary face tattoos paired with eye makeup tutorials on social media (I am!) and rethinking your own beliefs on this look.

7. Iridescent Holo Lips

When I was a kid, I thought oil slicks were beautiful. I never imagined that as an adult, I would be able to wear them on my face. The future is here, and it's magical. There are lip products out there now that can take a regular old lipstick and turn it into a shiny, color shifting rainbow. And this oil slick look won't harm any baby ducks.

8. Weird Beauty Masks

Bustle

There's just something so pampering about face masks, am I right? I'm pretty sure 2017 is going to gift us with even more weird face masks. Alien skin, solid gold, animal faces, slippery goo, peel-off sheets, strange fruit extracts -- it's all happening, and there's no sign this trend train is slowing down in the New Year.

9. Chest Contouring

So body contouring isn't new, and it isn't necessarily quirky, but it is something a little out of the ordinary that we're going to see more of in 2017. I mean, anything that lets you feel more comfortable with yourself that you can do with makeup you already own, well, we definitely want to keep doing that. Not that you need it. But you know.

10. Mismatched Eyes

Harley Quinn showed us a world where we can wear mismatched eye colors on purpose and look super cute.

11. Must-Have Collections

Storybook Cosmetics co-founder Mandy Maynard says 2017 will be all about collections, and I think she's right on the money. In 2017, magical, must-have collections, like their Wizardry and Witchcraft collection, will be on everyone's wish lists.

Really, though, the most important trend of 2017 will be about expressing our personal style and being yourself without paying attention to outdated rules or conventions. As it should be. #zerof*cks
